Selection: Button mushrooms are small and round, typically measuring 1 to 3 inches across. They have a pale white color when immature. As they mature, they can develop into cremini mushrooms (brown) and eventually portobello mushrooms (large and dark brown). The cap is smooth, and the gills underneath are tightly packed and pinkish-brown, turning darker as the mushroom ages.

Preparation: Button mushrooms can be eaten raw in salads, sautéed, grilled, roasted, or added to soups, stews, and pasta dishes. They are often used in a wide range of recipes, from tarts and omelets to risottos and pizzas.

Good for you: Button mushrooms are low in calories but high in essential nutrients. They are a good source of B vitamins, selenium, potassium, and phosphorus can contain antioxidants that help protect cells from damage.

And tastes so good: Button mushrooms have a mild, slightly earthy flavor that becomes more pronounced when cooked. They readily absorb the flavors of the ingredients they are cooked with, making them highly versatile in various dishes.
