Autumn Update from The Greengrocer
Cooler nights and shorter days.
Unfortunately, you will find the last of the summer Stone Fruit, Melons and corn over the next week in store, get in quick while they’re still here. Berries remain in reasonable supply for now.
In the local fruit section look for Apples, Pears, Kiwifruit, Figs and large Feijoas. The best buys in apples are Dazzle, Granny Smith and Royal Gala. For Pears the best value is in the Brown Bosc and Green Packham. All of which come from the Hawkes Bay. Your Kiwifruit selection is great at the moment with Green, Gold and Red all available. Gold is the most popular and best buying option at present.
For your salads, there is plentiful supply of both indoor and outdoor grown tomatoes. Iceburg Lettuce supply is good, along with all other Lettuce varieties we stock. The Avocado season is swiftly coming to a close, with volumes looking good for another month, after which things will get interesting.
Enjoy your locally grown Green Beans and Courgettes while they are still available, before we turn to Australian imports through the winter months. Broccoli as always is the most popular green and remains in good supply as long as the weather stays consistent. Celery and Leeks are also selling well.
For your hot dinners as the nights get cooler. Crown Pumpkins, Green Buttercup, Kumara, Onions and Potatoes along with Ohakune and Southland Carrots all are in regular supply at reasonable prices.
In the import area Bananas, Grapes, Pineapples, Mangoes along with USA Citrus are all arriving on a regular basis to offer everyone some variety to their diet.
